The fragrance of fall flowers whisper softly, arousing the attention of my senses. I am fond of flowers and gardening is a passion. In the early fall, flowers show off vivid colors and remarkable fragrance, displaying their beauty….particularly the roses. Roses can miraculously grow from just a cutting of a stem, giving root to a new plant. The roots of a rose bush are continually growing new stems. Growth, the giving of new life, is the flourish that draws me to gardening. The word radical, in gardening, refers to growth arising from or going to the root or source.; especially arising directly from the root. Just as the beauty of a flowering plant arises from a root source….our beauty arise from a divine source; planted by grace, rooted in love, adopted, being one in spirit with our Savior, brother, friend, Jesus. The following verses are evidence to our radical beauty!
Colossians 2:7
Let your roots grow down into him, and let your lives be built on him. Then your faith will grow strong in the truth you were taught, and you will overflow with thankfulness. (NLT)
Ephesians 3:17
Then Christ will make his home in your hearts as you trust in him. Your roots will grow down into God’s love and keep you strong. (NLT)
Ephesians 3:18-20
And may you have the power to understand, as all God’s people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep his love is. May you experience the love of Christ, though it is too great to understand fully. Then you will be made complete with all the fullness of life and power that comes from God. (NLT)
John 17:21
I pray that they will all be one, just as you and I are one—as you are in me, Father, and I am in you. And may they be in us so that the world will believe you sent me. (NLT)
1 Corinthians 6:17
But the person who is joined to the Lord is one spirit with him. (NLT)
Joined, bonded as one with the Lord is like another definition of radical, referring to chemistry – when two or more atoms bond together as a single unit. This union creates a newness which captures yet another form of the word radical – to be markedly new or introducing change. We are indeed radical in our roots, our bond, and our newness of life as we have risen from a divine source.
The whole chapter of Psalm 139 speaks of God’s intentionality in our unique creation. God knows our “downsitting and our uprising” (v2) and He did “knit us together in our mother’s womb”(v14).
